You need to adapt your organization to suit your activities. What criteria should you bear in mind?

1.1 A breakdown by independent themes

In general, R&D departments are divided into broad themes. If your company operates in very different sectors, it's not necessary to group everyone under the same umbrella. Indeed, it is possible to have one R&D or R&D&I department which will manage all the activity, but the "thematic departments" may very often have only very occasional relations. For example, some pharmaceutical companies divide R&D into major disease families.
