4. Our advice

  • Choose free, user-friendly bibliometric tools based on a large corpus of peer-reviewed journals (such as SCImago).

  • Compare comparable journals within the same field or country: French-language journals are naturally less cited than English-language ones.

  • Keep a critical eye: a magazine's reputation does not necessarily mean the reputation (and quality) of all its articles. More often than not, only a minority of articles account for the majority of citations.

  • The order of presentation of publications or institutions can change radically depending on the indicator used to rank them. Communicators know this... beware!
