Like most modern biomedical imaging techniques, two-photon optical microscopy requires the use of molecular contrast agents, in this case fluorescent probes capable of efficiently absorbing two photons simultaneously. The mechanisms of nonlinear optics in general, and of multiphoton absorption processes in particular, correspond to complex physical processes whose theoretical underpinnings go far beyond the scope of this article....
