6. Conclusion: towards biomimetic synthetic fabrics

Biomaterials based on natural collagen are excellent substitutes for extracellular matrix. As such, they provide countless services in regenerative medicine. From wound healing and cartilage regeneration to burn treatment and bone strengthening, collagen's diverse biomedical applications rely on its ability to interact with and support cells to rebuild tissue. However, the collagen used in medicine is extracted from animal tissue, which is problematic and limiting. To overcome this constraint, some research groups have recently turned their attention to the chemical production of artificial collagen. Although work in this field is still exploratory, synthetic collagen mimetics are extremely promising for the preparation of biomaterials.
