8. Conclusion
The global market for insect cell-based technologies is still relatively small. It is currently estimated at $2 billion, with an annual growth rate projected to be around 9%. It is estimated that, on average, 30 to 40% of the recombinant proteins used in biopharmaceutical research and development are produced in insect cells. This proportion is at odds with the underrepresentation of insect-based systems in the production of therapeutic proteins that have received marketing authorization. This underrepresentation is due to entirely objective biological and technical limitations. More specifically, these limitations relate to protein glycosylation in insect cells, as well as the production processes employed.
