4. Tetracyclic derivatives

Two classes of drugs feature a sequence of 4 fused cyclohexanoperhydroanthracene rings. Structurally, tetracycline antibiotics have a single aromatic ring, a dimethylamine function and a substituted or unsubstituted amide function. In contrast, anthracyclines with anticancer properties share 2 aromatic rings and an aminosugar-type substituent (figure 7 ).
