5. Macrocyclic derivatives

Macrocyclic compounds used in therapeutics are of natural or hemisynthetic origin. The first family, made up of antibiotics, antiparasitics, anticancer agents and immunosuppressants, has a macrocyclic lactone as a common motif (figure 8 ). Most of these compounds are produced by saprophytic bacteria of the genus Streptomyces, generally found in the surface layers of soils.
