3.1 Cellulose and its derivatives
Cellulose is a linear homopolymer composed of numerous D-anhydroglucopyranose (AGU) units linked by β-1,4 glycosidic bonds (table 2 ). The repeating unit is the cellobiose dimer.
AGUs have 3 hydroxyl functions: 2 secondary alcohols (in positions 2 and 3) and a primary alcohol (in position 6).
Cellulose does not dissolve in water or organic solvents, and so cannot be used directly as a film-forming agent.
