1. Preserving cosmetics

1.1 Generalities and issues

A preservative is any substance or mixture of substances used to combat the chemical or microbiological degradation of a product. More specifically, antimicrobial preservatives combat degradation caused by bacteria or fungi (microscopic fungi or yeasts).

Preservatives play several roles in the protection of cosmetic products. First and foremost, they protect cosmetic products from contamination that may be caused during production by :

  • raw materials (active ingredients, water, colorants, etc.) ;

  • packaging items ;

  • the atmosphere of the premises ;
