1. Electromagnetic compatibility in the railway sector

In the railway sector, the only aspect still being dealt with concerns low-frequency (f < 20 kHz) conducted electrical disturbances emitted by rolling stock to railway signalling circuits, since they are a threat to the safety of train movements.

The technological evolution of on-board equipment (proliferation of electronic equipment, increase in the di/dt and dv/dt of power semiconductors, etc.) has been accompanied by a correlative increase in the problems of high-frequency electromagnetic interference up to 1 GHz.

To avoid a critical situation, and to standardize practices, a Directive on Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) was adopted by the Council of the European Community in 1989, recognizing EMC as an important element in the design of equipment.
