Overview

ABSTRACT

One major component of a railway system is traction, with electricity as its main energy source. This source relies on technology that is continuously evolving, from the supply end to use in motive power units. The search for the best efficiency and economy in use is essential . Thus the scope of electric traction is ever widening in all transport categories, from high-speed to full-load traffic and urban transport.

 INTRODUCTION

Over the past forty years, electrical engineering and electronics have undergone profound changes in railway applications, both in terms of equipment and its integration into the "railway system", with economic, energy and environmental issues at stake, not forgetting the fundamental requirements of reliability and safety.

It is interesting to measure these developments in the three key areas of electric rail traction:

  • fixed train power supply systems ;

  • Powertrains, which provide on-board electromechanical conversion;

  • control-command equipment, formerly known as "signalling equipment", based on less sophisticated principles and designs than at present.
