1. What is a LIMS?
In this document, we'll be looking at off-the-shelf software packages, i.e. "off-the-shelf" computer programs sold by specialist publishers, which need to be parameterized before they can be used.
There are many different definitions of a LIMS. The one we have chosen is the following:
A LIMS is a method that a laboratory uses to manage its data, distribute the results it produces and manage the resources that are available. It must be able to manage the data lifecycle, which includes acquisition, storage, analysis reporting and archiving.
Data can be managed either manually or automatically using computers. In most laboratories, the LIMS manages data in an intermediary way: one part is manual and the other computerized.
