2. How to use a propette correctly

Using a pipette is fairly straightforward, but there are a few points to bear in mind when handling it, to ensure optimum precision and avoid damage.

As the pipette is not in direct contact with the liquid, a tip (also known as a cone) is attached to the end of the pipette.

2.1 The tips

It's important to choose the right tips for the brand and model of pipette you're using. Some less expensive generic tips are available, but they do not fit all models. This is especially true for volumes below 20 µl.

There are two main types of tip: standard tips and filter tips. The latter contain a small filter to prevent liquid from flowing back into the pipette. They are used, for example, in molecular biology applications...
