If one were to choose among the various atomic spectrometry techniques available, the quest for ever-lower detection limits would certainly often lead the analyst to opt for gas-phase atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) rather than flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). Indeed, the sensitivity of the latter is limited by several factors:

  • the flame temperature;

  • the dilution of the sample, which is essential for maintaining a constant flow rate;

  • interference;

  • etc.

In some respects, however, FAAS can rival electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (EAAS) and offers certain advantages due to its greater robustness and ease of use. In addition to these two techniques, other technologies may be employed,...
