2. Organic ions

2.1 Separation in CZE mode

As for the analysis of organic ions in CE, as with inorganic ions, the presence of a charge gives them their own electrophoretic mobility, which enables them to be separated in CZE according to the charge/size criterion. Approaches are generally distinct for cations and anions, with the aim of achieving rapid analyses, i.e. to place as far as possible in a co-electroosmotic mode, and high performance by optimizing the differences in mobility between analytes. Unlike inorganic ions, where complexation is often used, this approach is very rarely possible for organic ions, and selectivity depends on the classical CZE parameters, i.e. pH, ionic strength and the nature and solvent content of the separating electrolyte.
