6. Theoretical and practical solutions

The practical resolution of a dispersive system is its ability to separate two adjacent lines. Resolution is expressed in units of wavelength (pm), while resolving power is the ratio of wavelength (at which resolution has been measured) to resolution. The resolving power is therefore unitless. Practical resolution depends on :

  • of the theoretical resolution given by grating diffraction ;

  • bandwidth ;

  • optical aberrations.
