4. Stationary phase/mobile phase combinations: retention mechanisms

4.1 General

Solute molecules are considered immobile when in the stationary phase, and moving at the speed of the mobile phase when dissolved in it.

However, attachment to the stationary phase (adsorption or absorption) takes place without the solute molecule losing its identity. A weak bond is formed. The general expression of the chromatography differential equation is : δCmδt+uδCmδz+εδCsδtεδ2Cmδz2=0
