Overview
ABSTRACT
This article is mainly dedicated to thin layer (or planar) chromatography. A true economic alternative, this reliable method has applications in domains as varied as legal medicine, pharmaceutics or the food industry. The chromatographic process and its implementation are firstly presented: comparisons, application domains, etc. Fundamental quantities in planar chromatography are then dealt with for a better understanding of the phenomenon. To conclude, a detailed analysis of the stationary/mobile phase combinations (and retention mechanisms) is provided.

INTRODUCTION
Advances in adsorbent materials, instrumentation, quantification and detection capabilities have led to a renaissance in planar chromatography. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) is not only a cost-effective alternative, but also a practical, rapid and reliable method that does not require highly complex sample preparation.
It is used for screening in clinical toxicology, forensic medicine and pharmacognosy.
It plays an important role in the control of pharmaceutical products (identification, purity, stability, dosage) and food products (detection of toxic impurities).
