3. Analytical characteristics of potentiometric determinations

3.1 Fields of application

The most common potentiometric measurements are carried out in liquid media. This is why a good knowledge of solution chemistry is necessary to define the optimum conditions for meaningful potentiometric measurements.

For example, it is important to consult the potential-pH diagram (or to draw one up if it is not available) of the element to be determined, in order to ensure that the corresponding hydroxide does not precipitate.

Similarly, the ionic strength of the medium needs to be fixed, as mentioned above, without disturbing the measurement.
