3. Sampling
The objective of sampling is "to collect a portion of material from an environmental compartment (water, sediment or biological organism) of sufficient volume that it can be easily transported and handled in the laboratory, while faithfully representing the part of the environment sampled".
Central to representativeness is whether the sample portion truly represents the original environment, and whether the sampling and subsequent handling of the sample were carried out under controlled conditions (in other words, whether no changes have occurred, such as contamination from containers or loss due to adsorption on filters).
