7. Solid phase extraction applications

7.1 Environmental trace analysis

The application of SPE to the analysis of traces in water has been widely reported in the literature [20] . The low concentrations sought in these matrices require the percolation of high sample volumes, of the order of 200 to 500 mL, on deferred cartridges of 100 to 500 mg phase, or between 50 and 100 mL on in-line precolumns. The major analytical difficulty in this field is often the simultaneous extraction of compounds with widely varying physico-chemical characteristics, particularly in terms of polarity. One study highlights the possibility of extracting 109 water contaminants from the 132 substances on the European blacklist [21]...
