3.1 Photomixing for the generation of modulated THz signals
Photomixing is the technique of coupling two optical waves of different frequencies in a photodetector.
For example, if we illuminate a photo-mixer with two infrared lasers (e.g. 1,550.12 nm and 1,553.32 nm, giving 193.0 THz and 193.4 THz respectively), we'll create, among the current components in the photodiode, a current oscillating at 193.4 – 193.0 = 0.4 THz = 400 GHz. This current can then be radiated, if required, by an antenna matched to this frequency.
