14.  Automatic stations and data acquisition systems

14.1  Definitions

Automatic stations refer to equipment of varying importance, which either collect meteorological data without human intervention (desert regions, high mountains, buoys, etc.) or lighten the workload of observers at traditional weather stations by performing a number of repetitive tasks involving the acquisition and processing of primary parameters. In this case, they are considered to be equipment that aids meteorological observation.

Automatic stations are increasingly being integrated, either directly or via hubs, into IP-based computer networks that ensure data transmission and enable real-time monitoring of the various components of the system.
