10.1 Definitions
Measurements of evaporation from open water surfaces and soil, as well as plant transpiration, are of great importance in agronomic and hydrometeorological studies. The rate of evaporation from any body or surface is determined by various factors that can be divided into two main categories: meteorological factors (radiation, ventilation, water vapor pressure, etc.) and factors specific to the evaporating surface.
The term evaporometer refers to a number of instruments used to measure water loss from a standard saturated surface. These devices cannot directly measure actual evapotranspiration (i.e., the total amount of water released into the atmosphere through soil evaporation and plant transpiration)...
