4. Polymers

Synthetic and bio-based polymers, as well as their mixtures and solutions, constitute a broad class of soft matter systems. Polymers, on their own or mixed with other materials, are at the origin of many everyday objects (tires, adhesives, textiles, packaging, etc.). Synthetic and biological polymers are essential components of complex natural and artificial objects, such as biological cells and composite materials. Their physical properties, and in particular their mechanical properties, depend on numerous physico-chemical parameters. Temperature is the essential parameter defining the physical state (liquid, rubbery or solid) in which a polymer material is found.

The simplest macromolecule, also known as a polymer chain, is made up of a regular, linear sequence of the same chemical unit, called a monomer.
