5. Examples of devices

  • In short, vibrating gyroscopes can operate in either gyrometer or gyroscope mode, depending on the type of resonator used. The practical realization of mechanical resonators leads to a wide variety of devices. The first requirement for a resonator is a high quality factor, i.e. the largest possible resonator damping time constant (remember that the time constant of Foucault's pendulum in the Pantheon was around 2 hours!). Depending on the concept and technology used, the result can be found in a very wide range of performances and costs, from the rustic and inexpensive gyrometer for automotive applications (navigation with GPS (Global Positioning System) satellite receiver, active suspension...) to the high-performance and reliable gyroscope for space applications.
