2. Theoretical approach

As previously announced, the determination of residual stress using ultrasound is based on the dependence of the propagation velocity of ultrasonic waves on the state of stress in the material. When a material is subjected to stress, there is a variation in the propagation velocity of the ultrasonic wave. This variation is due to non-linear elastic effects formalized by Murnaghan .
