History

The production of oils from oilseeds and fruits dates back to ancient times, probably to different periods, and the invention of the first oil press can be traced back to prehistoric times. Its origins can be traced back to the Near East, around 4000 BC, more precisely to Egypt, thanks to pollen samples found in archaeological remains. For the Romans, olive oil was a sacred product used in the sarcophagi of pharaohs to wish them peace in the afterlife. It was also used in pharmacopoeia and cosmetics. Later, in Greece, olive oil became an essential component of the Olympic Games, with gladiators being coated in oil to reduce falls and burns. At the same time, olive oil was used as fuel and for lighting lamps, as well as for cosmetic and medicinal purposes.
