6. Conclusion

Current achievements clearly show that, even if knowledge is imperfect, if models are incomplete or if sensors sometimes fail, the progress enabled by automation is significant. Many methods have been developed in laboratories, and there are often tools adapted to the problems encountered. The key is to master the method that leads, through controlled engineering, to a valid and reliable solution at industrial level.

The potential of automation is considerable, and cannot be overlooked when it comes to improving production tools. A few examples cannot illustrate exhaustively the wide range of actual and potential applications. Every successful application is rooted in an approach built on an understanding of the process, its needs and constraints.
