5. Atmospheric environment management

Many of the provisions contained in French legislation on air quality transpose or reinforce European environmental directives. In particular, they establish:

  • limit values to be observed in ambient air for various pollutants;

  • the quality of fuels and emissions from various sources of pollution;

  • national emission ceilings to be met by Member States.

5.1 National level

At the national level, the Ministry of the Environment is responsible for developing and implementing regulations on ambient air quality. Local enforcement of these regulations is the responsibility of prefects, with technical support from decentralized government agencies...
