Methanogenesis is a natural biological process that transforms a complex substrate - which may be composed of "heavy", often insoluble organic molecules - anaerobically, i.e. in an oxygen-deprived environment, into methane (biogas). The most spectacular illustration of this phenomenon is the formation of oil slicks from plant deposits, with natural gas deposits as the ultimate stage.

As a preliminary remark, a distinction should be made between the methanization of solids suspended in water (methanization of sludge from urban or industrial wastewater treatment plants), more appropriately referred to as "sludge digestion", and the methanization of liquids, which concerns materials in solution in said liquids.
