3. Bio-based plastics
The first plastics, Parkesine and Celluloid, were developed from cellulose in the nineteenth century and were, in fact, bio-based. With the development of petroleum- and gas-based chemistry, fossil-based plastics gradually gained prominence due to their cost and the wide range of properties they offer.
The late 20th century was marked by new developments in bio-based plastics, particularly for use in packaging.
