3. Vertical confinement

The containment techniques presented below call for fairly substantial means of implementation, which are justified for a minimum volume of polluted soil, below which excavation operations are generally more appropriate.

The limits in terms of depth and surface area are given in the figure 6 for information purposes, depending on the presence or absence of a water table.

Typical applications of containment include :

  • pollution which is generally found at a depth of more than 3 metres;

  • for shallower depths, containment is not recommended in the case of smaller pollution surfaces:
