1. Oxidation and reduction

1.1 Oxidation

Originally, the term "oxidation" was used to describe the attachment of oxygen to a chemical element or compound, and "oxidants" to describe bodies that can give up oxygen (starting with oxygen itself) and therefore react with all oxygen-hungry bodies; a simple and classic example of oxidation is the action of oxygen on ferrous oxide, which is converted into ferric oxide:
