4. Basic principles of anti-counterfeiting marking

A controller proceeds in two stages: identification and authentication.

  • identification allows visual recognition of the protected product; the trademark, the image and the various indications are all information that allow the inspector to know what he has in front of him: the product asserts an identity;

  • Authentication enables this identity to be verified, by checking that the marking is genuine and associated with the right product.

Anti-counterfeiting marking solutions can take different forms, since the technical, logistical and financial criteria depend on the substrate on which they are applied, the application system(s), the levels and means of control required, the resistance of the marking system and the value of the product to be protected.
