1. General

1.1 Definition

Ergonomics was defined in 1988 by the Société d'Ergonomie de Langue Française as "the application of scientific knowledge relating to man, and necessary to design tools, machines and devices that can be used with maximum comfort, safety and efficiency for the greatest number of people".

Ergonomics draws its knowledge from two sources:

  • on the one hand, scientific disciplines describing human properties (physiology, psychology) provide data on the human body and the properties of human thought. From this point of view, ergonomics is rooted in the natural sciences: man has inescapable properties, which can be described and taken into account, but not modified.
