5. Regional health insurance funds
When the Social Security system was set up in 1945-1946, the Regional Health Insurance Funds (Caisses régionales d'assurance maladie - CRAM) were given the task of managing and preventing accidents at work and occupational illnesses. In the French overseas departments, this role is performed by the Caisses générales de Sécurité sociale des départements d'outre-mer (CGSS).
The role of the CRAMs is to compile statistics on accidents at work and occupational illnesses occurring in their area, to calculate and notify companies of their contribution rates for accidents at work and occupational illnesses, and to carry out specific preventive actions, involving representatives of employers and employees in the Regional Technical Committees (CTR) set up by the Boards of Directors of each CRAM.
