INTRODUCTION
Activity-based specifications are based on an ergonomic analysis of the work situations to be designed or transformed. Its aim is to provide the designer (engineer, designer, methods office) with operational reference points on :
the ways in which operators mobilize their knowledge, know-how and skills in carrying out their work;
the consequences that working conditions can have on operators (health) and on production (quantity, quality).
The aim of these specifications is to optimize the work system from the dual standpoint of protecting the health of operators and the efficiency of the company. It is based on detailed knowledge of operators' work activities (hence the name). It can also be fed by a certain amount of basic normative data (anthropometry, workstation sizing, etc.) or by recommendations concerning the characteristics and limits of human functioning.
The example of a transformation of a work situation, chosen to illustrate this form of specification, is based on an operation to improve working conditions carried out by an SME. Note the role of the "participative" work group set up to analyze the situation and produce recommendations.
