2. Approved standards

Certain standards may be made mandatory by a national provision (in accordance with the aforementioned Decree no. 2009-697), by a directly applicable European provision (in the case of a regulation), or by an indirectly applicable provision (transposition of a directive into national law), which makes them enforceable.

To support national regulations, the standards concerned must, in principle, be approved by the Association française de normalisation (Afnor), based on the results of a public inquiry and in the absence of a veto from the Délégué interministériel aux normes (DIN). These standards have an identifier beginning with the prefix "NF", attesting to their approval (see Note).

Note :

They should not be confused with experimental standards ("XP" prefix) or simple specifications....
