1. Technical standard definitions

In addition to the above-mentioned WTO definition, there are other definitions of a technical standard. Here, we'll focus on those derived from French and EU regulations. It should be noted that all standards bodies, starting with ISO, have their own definitions...

The French decree governing standardization defines it as follows (see Note):

"It is an activity of general interest, the purpose of which is to provide reference documents drawn up by consensus by all interested parties, covering rules, characteristics, recommendations or examples of good practice, relating to products, services, methods, processes or organizations. It aims to encourage economic development, innovation and sustainable development."
