3. Conclusion
We have seen in the preceding paragraphs that the overall dimensions of a diesel engine depend on the choices made for the combustion system, whether for direct or indirect injection: height of the piston and crankcase, cylinder head architecture; positioning of the injector and spark plug, maximum pressure in the combustion chamber dimensioning the mobile coupling and engine base, cooling, layout of the intake ducts in the cylinder head.
The design of a new diesel engine cannot be undertaken without a solid database, built up from tests on similar engines or experimental single-cylinder units.
Mechanical and thermal calculations then save a great deal of time on the endurance aspects, for which, however, validation tests are essential.
