10. Flow measurements

The various flow rates that are useful to characterize on an engine test bench are: intake air flow rate, exhaust gas flow rate (which can be calculated from the intake air flow rate, boost pressure, fuel flow rate, etc.), as well as injector flow rate and internal engine gas leakage flow rate.

10.1 Intake air flow measurement

The intake air flow is measured by connecting a measuring device to the engine air intake in a sealed manner.

In addition to their accuracy, the measurement systems to be implemented must offer the lowest possible pressure losses so as to cause as little disruption as possible to the inlet pressure.
