7. Laser velocimetry

Laser applications enable speed measurements to be taken in intake and exhaust ducts as well as in the cylinders of research engines. These tests are generally carried out on single-cylinder research engines equipped with the necessary optical devices. These tests are always very delicate and require great care in terms of preparation and analysis of the results. When viewing inside the cylinder of a running engine, it is necessary to install viewing ports and check that engine vibrations do not cause significant variations in the laser's point of focus inside the cylinder.

IAV has developed a laser velocimetry system called DGV (Doppler Global Velocimetry) that is particularly well suited to measurements on gasoline and diesel engines. It has numerous fields of application:
