8. Air pollution

Motor vehicles contribute significantly to air pollution, due in part to engine exhaust gases and in part to evaporation losses. Pollutant emissions are measured using specific, expensive, high-precision measuring devices that require regular calibration and drift checks.

8.1 Source and measurement of evaporation losses

Evaporation losses consist mainly of volatile hydrocarbons. Their quantity depends on the temperature inside the tank and fuel supply system, the ambient air temperature, and the temperature of the vehicle in general. Most evaporation losses come from fuel.
