2. General rolling characteristics

2.1 Functional tolerances

In addition to dimensional tolerances, ISO 492 also defines functional tolerances which guarantee rotational precision (table 1 ). Runout is measured by placing the dial gauge radially. It reflects a lack of circularity in the raceway of the ring being measured. Wobble is measured by positioning the dial gauge axially. On a pair of preloaded bearings, the combination of runout defects on the 4 rings results in a conical motion defect during rotation.

Inner ring out-of-roundness and out-of-roundness are measured by rotating the inner ring only.

The out-of-round and out-of-round of the outer ring are measured by rotating the outer ring only.
