1. Defining the braking moment

History

In 1897, Herbert Frood developed a lining made from a section of transmission belt; he then came up with the idea of impregnating woven and braided asbestos in binding mixtures of the phenolic type. Production began in 1902, and the Frood name, in a modified form, gave rise to the Ferodo brand, a name sometimes used to designate friction linings. Originally based on empirical designs, they are now the subject of scientific research, the development of which has kept pace with demand, particularly in the automotive, aviation and railroad sectors.

The smoothness of a brake is characterized by its smoothness index, the ratio of the relative variation in braking torque to the relative variation in the coefficient of friction (article ).
