Overview

ABSTRACT

Mechatronics was initially used on the first industrial robots and in the aeronautics sector. It has gradually found its place at various levels of the mechanical sector, from basic components to complete systems. It is now involved in every domain of applications. Over the years, mechatronic products have been used in transportation (automotive, aeronautic, etc.), industrial applications, the general public sector and medical sector. This article focuses on ten recent products in order to highlight both the range of possible applications and the true interest of mechatronics. Original, ingenious and efficient, they illustrate in their own way what results can be achieved through the usage of an integrated mechatronics design in terms of performances, cost or new functionalities. Their number is to increase exponentially with the arrival of the first generations of mechatronic engineers.

 INTRODUCTION

The term "mechatronics" was coined in 1969. It was coined by two Japanese engineers, Tetsuro Mori and Jiveshwar Sharma, working at Yaskawa Electric Corporation, a Japanese manufacturer of electric motors and controllers. The term marked the beginning of the technology's diffusion. It had been coined in the late 1950s, the era of the nascent "electronization" of mechanical products made possible by the development of transistors (the transistor itself was invented in 1947).

This dossier lists a number of recent industrial applications, which are not strictly in the domain of pure mechanics or pure electronics, but in mechatronics proper.
