4. Static and dynamic stresses

4.1 Static dimensioning

Mechanical elements, including springs, are dimensioned to remain in the elastic range (below the yield point) for the maximum load experienced during operation.

The word "static" in this dimensioning comes from the fact that the elastic limit of the material is generally obtained in a quasi-static tensile test (slow displacement of the moving crosshead). This does not in any way mean that the calculation is necessarily carried out when the mechanism is at rest, or even that the spring calculation is only valid when the mechanism is at rest.
