1.1 Classification of radioactive waste

The physical and chemical nature, level and type of radioactivity are all characteristics that differ from one waste to another. Radioactive waste generally contains a mixture of radionuclides: uranium, caesium, iodine, cobalt, radium, tritium... Depending on their composition, they are more or less radioactive, for longer or shorter periods.

In France, the classification of radioactive waste is based mainly on two parameters: the level of radioactivity and the half-life of the radionuclides present in the waste.

As regards the level of radioactivity in the waste, a distinction is made between very low-level, low-level, medium-level and high-level waste.
