Overview

ABSTRACT

The thermodynamic properties of pure substances can be graphically represented in a plane, in the form of thermodynamic charts. Several coordinate systems can be chosen depending on the use made of these diagrams. In this paper, we provide a dozen examples of charts and show how three types of cycle can be plotted in them.

 INTRODUCTION

This article follows on from the article Thermodynamic diagrams – Generalities [BE 8 040] in which the basic thermodynamics used to draw up the diagrams were presented. We refer the reader to this article for explanations of the equations used and for nomenclature.

The article itself is structured in three parts: first, the main types of diagrams used in practice are presented; a dozen examples relating to some common fluids are then given; finally, the representation in these diagrams of three basic thermodynamic cycles is explained (steam power plant cycle, R 134a refrigeration cycle, and gas turbine cycle).
